In this digital era, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the lives of young people stands as a defining aspect of their formative experiences. The impact of AI on the younger generation’s learning, social interactions, and overall development is currently leaving a mark on their experiences, shaping the way they engage with technology and the world around them.
Recently, the 16th APNG Camp, held at Kasetsart University in Bangkok from February 23 to 25, 2024, was a captivating exploration into Generative AI and its impact on society. The event featured a range of activities, including keynote speeches, group projects, and cultural presentations, creating a unique experience. Throughout the camp, fellows were treated to insightful keynote speeches into the advancements and applications of Generative AI. These talks provided valuable perspectives on how this technology has shaped and continues to influence different aspects of our society.
The author’s favorite lecture during the camp was the presentation by Professor Emeritus Dr. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai, Acting Director of the School of Integrated Innovation (SCII) at Chulalongkorn University. That lecture provided insightful information about AI from various perspectives, including political, economic, and social aspects. Professor discussed the application of Generative AI highlighting its potential impact. It served as a valuable guide for understanding the broader implications of AI, encouraging a proactive approach to adapting and utilizing this technology.
Fellows also engaged in group projects, where they applied their knowledge and skills to collaborative endeavors. They were grouped into six and presented the issues and solutions based on their research while receiving mentorship at the same time. On the last day of the camp, each group presented on topics such as language, painting, music, film, job displacement, and entrepreneurship. Mute-AI for Sign Language Interpretation (Group 1) was awarded when their presentation was informative and insightful. That hands-on approach allowed them to deepen their understanding of Generative AI while working toward practical solutions and innovations. The cultural presentations added a vibrant and diverse dimension to the fellows while exchanging cultures and traditions among them.
The 16th APNG Camp proved a dynamic and enriching experience, bringing together a diverse community of enthusiasts, experts, and innovators to explore the continuously evolving landscape of Generative AI. The event’s success was attributed to the shared insights and collaborative spirit that permeated throughout, fostering a strong sense of community and pushing the boundaries of knowledge in the field. Reflecting on the vibrant and stimulating atmosphere, it becomes evident that such gatherings play a crucial role as platforms for nurturing the curiosity and potential of young minds in the realm of Generative AI and its impact on the Digital World. Looking ahead, the anticipation is building for the 17th APNG Camp, scheduled to take place in Japan next year. Encouraging more young people to participate in such camps is essential to further enriching the field and cultivating the next generation of innovators.
