NetMission Case Study Series 2024

Bridging Divides and Navigating Digital Landscapes: A Study on Internet Access, Cybersecurity, and Sustainable Practices in Asia Pacific

NetMission Case Study Series 2024 presents a collection of case studies on key Internet Governance topics conducted by the five (5) working groups of young minds from across the Asia Pacific within NetMission Academy. This series offers valuable findings and insights from a youth perspective from case studies explored and shared during the online academy sessions held from December 2023 to February 2024. With thorough study and collaborative efforts, the five working groups identified essential insights and proposed innovative approaches to the multiple challenges faced by the Asia Pacific digital landscape.

Chapter 1 delves into bridging the digital divide in Papua New Guinea (PNG) to improve the quality of education, suggesting potential solutions such as satellite internet technology & also examines internet shutdowns in the Asia Pacific region, emphasizing the prevalence, reasons, and implications of such actions. It advocates for transparency, human rights protection, economic considerations, and advocacy to address these issues effectively.

Chapter 2 discusses online harassment in Pakistan and internet shutdowns in Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive solutions and collaboration between stakeholders and emphasizing the devastating impact on freedom of expression, access to information, and essential services.

Chapter 3 addresses cybersecurity challenges in South Asia, with a focus on India’s largest data breach and a cyberattack on Pakistan’s National Institutional Facilitation Technologies. These case studies underscore the critical need for comprehensive cybersecurity measures, strict data protection laws, and proactive strategies to safeguard sensitive information and financial systems.

Chapter 4 delves into India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) evolution and its fusion with AI in targeted advertising. India Stack sets the stage with foundational DPIs, enabling seamless public services and citizen empowerment. However, utilizing DPI data for personalized marketing introduces ethical and security complexities. Adhering to global standards, exploring blockchain, and promoting responsible AI are vital in this dynamic landscape.

Chapter 5 discusses sustainable business practices, focusing on strategies for environmental responsibility and economic viability. Case studies on Olam International’s digital transformation and climate action initiatives in Singapore, along with efforts to phase out fossil fuel subsidies in the Asia-Pacific region, highlight the importance of integrating digital solutions with sustainability goals. Overall, these chapters underscore the imperative for organizations and governments to embrace digital transformation, cybersecurity measures, and sustainable practices to address complex challenges and achieve long-term societal and environmental goals.

This case studies series emphasizes the growing role of youth voices in shaping a more inclusive and equitable digital future for all stakeholders in Asia Pacific and beyond. We invite policymakers, researchers, and all stakeholders to explore these case studies and engage with NetMission Academy to learn more.
