Information technology security is very important because it can help to protect sensitive data in all types of businesses and organizations. It was a very useful online meeting of training IV: Cybersecurity, Privacy, and Safer Internet on Netmission Academy.
Cybersecurity, also known as information technology security, is the process of how to secure the online usage by preventing the attacks from the criminal on the internet while Cyberattack which is a threat actor can gain access to a server, host, or network. The other term is Cybercrime, which is the state that is being done by using computer technology to commit the crime.
Additionally, I gain some knowledge of various types of cyberattacks such as Viruses, Malware, DDos and activities such as Phishing, Email hijacking, Cyberstalking. On top of that, it is the fact that our privacy is really important that all are needed to be protected. Along with this, data management also plays an important role and has a good impact on multi-stakeholders. Data management is called surveillance which is about learning the data of each person’s purpose, and it is a part of administrative that characterizes the societies and to influence or control one specific aim. There are 2 main types of surveillance such as state surveillance which is to find the proof against someone who is suspected of a crime or keeping track of whose purpose is rebelling against a government. Another term is consumer surveillance is a way of keeping track of people or employees.
There was an interesting policy question was “What can multistakeholder do to improve regional/global security? “. As the case in Cambodia before, privacy and data protection were still limited. For instance, the data of Cambodian students are posted online in public including the name, date of birth, score and so on. For this reason, all of that data is not protected properly while the government and other organizations just post it publicly on social media. For now, the government is trying to implement the policy to keep citizen data privately for many other issues.
Gathering the experiences from the Netmission Academy including presenters and speakers, previous Internet Governance Forums and some training in my organization, there are some basic strategies and mitigation to help you to be secure online:
- Use trusted end-to-end encryption media such as Telegram or WhatApp: the data are protected so that the third party could not understand the discussion between the sender and receiver.
- Be careful with unknown emails and external download: sometimes, some cyber intruders might have an attempt to inject some viruses to your devices by sending some similar link that is similar to other popular domain names. For example: www.netnisson.asia. When we take a glance at this link at first, we might think it is www.netmission.asia or any other cases like “clicking here” in some email.
- Be careful with IoT (Internet of Things): we might take it for granted from our devices at homes such as smart homes, or smart cameras, but it is required to connect to the internet, so we need to be careful with it.
